I want a web site, what do I need?

The two main categories of web design are creating new web sites and updating existing web sites.

Creating New Web Sites:

You have decided to establish a new web presence, Great! Now What? If you are new to the web design concept, below you will find a short description of the three basic things needed to establish a web presence.

1) The Web Site:

You probably could have guessed you would need this, or you wouldn't be here. But, what is a web site? A web site is the collection of web pages that are related. A web page is nothing more than a file with a bunch of code in it that the web browser installed on your computer knows how to interpret. The code tells the browser what size and color the text should be, where graphical elements should appear on the page, how components should behave and which keywords are relevant to search engines.

Modern web sites use a variety of techniques and applications to interact with their audience. For example, this site uses HTML code to create the text you are reading. Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) are then added to control the size, color and position of the text, as well as the position of the graphical elements. Adobe® Flash® was used to create the animations of the building windows on the left and navigational billboard on the right. And finally php code controls the user log-in system. These elements blend seamlessly to produce the web site you see here.

The possibilities are as limitless as your imagination.

2) Hosting:

A web host is the place where the files that make up your web site are stored. The host makes these files available to users browsing the web. If you already have a preferred host, we can work with that host to get your site uploaded to the internet.

If you need a host, View Eight can help you. Check out our hosting packages.

3) A Domain Name:

The domain name is your address on the internet. Domain names begin with www. and end with .com (or .net, .org, .gov, .edu...). The domain name is what is typed into the address bar on the web browser to take users to your web site.

When choosing a domain name, there are a few things to keep in mind: domain names should be short, descriptive, and easy to remember. This process is a bit more complicated than just picking a name, because every web address needs to be unique. If you find that www.yourcompanyname.com is already taken, then a word such as "online" or "ohio" might need to be added to find an available domain. But, don't worry we will help you find one!

Once you have picked out a unique domain name, then the domain will be registered with a domain registrar. The domain registrar can then point the domain to the host you have selected, and walla! your site will be live on the internet.

If that last paragraph sounds a bit complex, fear not, View Eight will take care of this process for you.

Updating Existing Web Sites:

If you are looking to expand or upgrade your current site, we are happy to help with that. All you will need to know where your site is hosted, and the access codes to allow us to download the existing site and work on it.
